During the COVID-19 pandemic; NDIS are temporarily broadening the flexible approach to low-cost assistive technology (IT) items so participants can continue to receive NDIS funded supports and services.

Participants can use their existing NDIS funding to purchase an item if it meets all of the criteria on the assistive technology explained page on the NDIS website.

It is recommended that participants talk with their existing providers about the best way to receive services and supports while maintaining physical distancing - this might innclude using available technology, developing programs you can do at home, borrowing equipment or keeping in touch over the phone.

This is a time-limited policy, which will be in place until September 2020 and will be reviewed in July 2020.

New measured to support NDIS participants during COVID-19:

  • All NDIA offices are closed to the public. Services are being provided via phone, email or webchat.
  • NDIS plans can be extendedd for up to 24 months.
  • Plans will automatically be extended by 12 months (replacing the previous 28 day rule)
  • There is some flexibility moving Capacity Building funding to Core funding.
  • Support Coordination could be accessed from the Core funding.
  • You will not be penalised for unspent funds during this COVID pandemic.
